Anthropic Targets Neglected Diseases with New AI Program

Anthropic revealed Tuesday it's starting an internal drug discovery program focused on neglected diseases. These are conditions that don't attract big pharmaceutical investment, often because they affect smaller patient populations or lack profit potential.

The San Francisco company isn't just building AI tools for others to use. It's getting into the lab itself to develop treatments alongside the drugmakers it hopes to serve.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's life sciences head, explained the hands-on approach at a company event. "We need to live it along with all of you," he said, noting that working directly on drug development creates valuable feedback loops for improving their AI models.

The announcement came alongside the launch of Claude Science, a new AI product designed specifically for pharmaceutical companies. By running its own discovery program, Anthropic can test and refine these tools in real-world conditions.

As a public benefit company, Anthropic can prioritize patient benefit over profit. This structure allows them to pursue diseases the commercial market overlooks without pressure to maximize returns.

The company hasn't detailed what happens if they discover promising drug candidates. Traditional pharmaceutical companies would move candidates into clinical trials, but Anthropic says they'll share more as the work progresses.
