Arizona English Teacher Wins $2,500 Award for Empowering Students

An Arizona high school English teacher who sees her job as teaching students to think for themselves just received $2,500 and recognition for her dedication.

Victoria Patton won the July "Pay Tribute to a Teacher" award, sponsored by Your Valley Toyota Dealers and KTAR News 92.3 FM. She teaches at Mountainside High School in Wittmann after previously working at Desert Edge High School in Goodyear.

Patton didn't choose English teaching just because she loves books. She sees the subject as training ground for critical thinking and decision making that students will need throughout their lives.

"It's more about analyzing, being able to critically think, and I really have a passion for empowering my students to make their own decisions and to evaluate situations," Patton told KTAR News. She believes reading and writing effectively are the foundation for being a successful adult.

What sets Patton apart is her understanding that today's students face challenges she never experienced. She acknowledges the pressure from social media and recognizes that respecting those struggles helps build trust.
