Vast solar panel array stretching across Arizona desert landscape under blue sky

Arizona Solar Farm to Power Tesla Starting 2028

Mind Blown

A massive 450-megawatt solar farm with battery storage is rising in Arizona's Mojave Desert, and Tesla has already claimed 90% of its clean electricity. Once complete in 2028, Project Sterling will light up homes for up to 16 hours daily using sunshine alone.

Construction crews just broke ground on one of America's largest solar-plus-storage projects, and it's a glimpse into how our power grid is quietly transforming.

ContourGlobal is building Project Sterling about 20 miles north of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The facility will blanket more than 2,000 acres of desert with over 760,000 solar panels paired with 300 battery storage containers.

The scale is impressive. Those panels will generate 509 megawatts of power, while the batteries can store 1.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity and discharge it for about four hours at full capacity.

Here's what makes this special: the combination of solar panels and batteries means clean power won't vanish when the sun sets. Sterling will deliver electricity for up to 16 hours each day, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.

Tesla has already locked in a long-term agreement to purchase about 1 terawatt-hour annually, which represents roughly 90% of Sterling's expected yearly output. That's enough clean electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The project uses lithium iron phosphate batteries with liquid cooling and fire protection systems. ContourGlobal says Sterling will become its largest renewable energy asset anywhere in the world.

The Ripple Effect

The benefits extend beyond just clean power. Construction will employ around 400 workers through 2028, with local crews handling roads and site logistics.

The project includes building a new 5.2-mile access road connecting to historic Route 66. Sterling will plug into the Western Area Power Administration's grid and has secured transmission rights to sell power into California's electricity market.

This matters because massive battery storage systems like Sterling are making renewable energy more reliable and practical. When solar farms can store sunshine and release it during evening peak demand, they compete directly with fossil fuel plants that used to dominate those hours.

Projects like this show the clean energy transition isn't just talk anymore.
