Arizona Teen Saves Woman With Dementia in 103° Heat
A 14-year-old boy on a bike ride noticed something was wrong and stopped to help an elderly stranger wandering in dangerous triple-digit heat. His quick thinking and compassion likely saved her life.
Royal Cothrun was riding his bike through Gilbert, Arizona when he spotted 75-year-old Teresa Morgan struggling on a sidewalk in 103-degree heat. While other cyclists might have kept pedaling, the 14-year-old stopped to help.
"I don't even know, she just looked like something was wrong, so I started talking to her," Cothrun told ABC 15 Arizona. Morgan, who had recently been diagnosed with dementia, had become disoriented after grocery shopping and wandered miles from home.
Cothrun was wearing Google Glasses that captured the moment on video. The footage shows him gently talking with Morgan, trying to figure out where she lived and how to get her help.
He guided her to a shaded spot, recognizing the danger she faced. "I knew it was hot. She was sweating," he said.
Through patient conversation, Cothrun helped Morgan remember her son Jeff's phone number. He called him immediately, and Jeff raced to their location while paramedics were dispatched to check on his mother.

"It's incredible, really, what he did," Jeff Morgan said. "Just so lucky, so fortunate that he ran across her and he cared enough to stay with her and to take care of her."
Why This Inspires
Cothrun's actions earned recognition from the Gilbert Fire Department, the Air National Guard, and Congressman Andy Biggs. But his mother wasn't surprised at all.
She told reporters that helping people has always been part of who her son is. He stayed calm and compassionate throughout the entire rescue.
Gilbert Fire Department Captain Ryan McHugh emphasized the seriousness of the situation. "The outcome could have been, would have been much, much worse had he not done what he did."
The story resonated deeply online, with thousands praising the teen's awareness and kindness. One commenter wrote, "There's still hope for humanity when I see things like that." Another noted, "A kid with this level of awareness, competence and willingness to help is so rare."
In dangerous heat and a confusing situation, a teenager chose compassion over convenience and made all the difference.
