Maryvale High School guard Adrian Stubbs dribbles basketball during game in Phoenix, Arizona

Arizona Teen Scores 100 Points in 3 Quarters

🦸 Hero Alert

Phoenix high school basketball player Adrian Stubbs made history Tuesday night, becoming the first Arizona player ever to score 100 points in a single game. He shattered a 59-year-old state record and sat out the entire fourth quarter.

Adrian Stubbs walked off the court Tuesday night having rewritten Arizona high school basketball history, and he didn't even play the fourth quarter.

The Phoenix Maryvale High School guard became the first player in state history to score 100 points in a single game, leading his team to a 109-25 victory over Yuma Kofa High School. Stubbs obliterated the previous state record of 75 points, which had stood untouched since the 1965-66 season.

The most remarkable part? He scored every single one of Maryvale's 70 points in the first half alone.

After dropping 35 points in the opening quarter, Stubbs said his coach Jeremy Smith gave him the green light to keep going. He added another 35 in the second quarter, then tacked on 30 more in the third before taking a well-deserved seat on the bench for the final period.

Stubbs credited his teammates for making the historic night possible. "That was probably the most unselfish game I've ever seen in my life," he told The Arizona Republic. "Without them, this would not be possible. All of those passes. All the steals. It's a huge shout out to them."

The performance nearly doubled his previous career high of 56 points. That earlier mark had come just one point shy of the state's 6A record (the classification for Arizona's largest schools), set by Nico Mannion, who later starred for the University of Arizona and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors.

Why This Inspires

This wasn't about one player showboating. It was about a team rallying around a shared goal and executing it perfectly.

Coach Smith revealed that beating Mannion's record was actually one of Stubbs' individual goals before the season started. "This kid doesn't cease to amaze me," Smith said. "His will to win and fight and grit are second to none."

Stubbs showed impressive efficiency throughout the night, mixing up his attack with mid-range jumpers, three-pointers, and free throws. He connected on 16 of 23 free throw attempts and scored 18 points from beyond the arc.

The junior guard, who entered the game averaging 24 points per game, now has his name permanently etched in Arizona basketball history.
