Armenia-Azerbaijan Move Closer to Historic Peace Deal

Two neighboring nations once locked in conflict are proving that peace is possible, not just on paper but in everyday life.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have already initialed a peace agreement text in Washington, and now both countries are working through the final steps to make it official. One major milestone is underway: Armenia is rewriting its constitution to remove language that concerns Azerbaijan about territorial claims.

Arusyak Julakyan, a deputy in Armenia's parliament, confirmed that the new constitution draft should be ready by the end of this year. That timeline puts a final peace signing within reach for 2027.

But here's the remarkable part: peace is already happening on the ground. Trade trucks now carry cargo between the two countries, with Azerbaijan even supplying oil and fuel to Armenia. The border has gone quiet, with no shots fired and no casualties. Parliamentary leaders from both nations are meeting regularly.

"Peace currently exists between Armenia and Azerbaijan," said Rasim Musabayov, a member of Azerbaijan's parliamentary committee on international relations. The formal agreement would simply make official what's already becoming reality.

The Ripple Effect

This peace process matters far beyond two nations finally ending their conflict. It opens a path for Armenia to normalize relations with Turkey, which could transform the economic prospects for the entire region.

The shift is already changing daily life for ordinary citizens who live near the border. Families who once feared violence now see trucks crossing peacefully. Farmers can work their land without the sound of gunfire. Children are growing up with the possibility that their generation won't inherit their parents' war.

Former Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov emphasized that Armenia has options for how to handle the constitutional changes, whether through referendum or amendment. The key is that both sides seem committed to finishing what they've started.

Economic pressures are also pushing both nations toward lasting peace. Armenia especially stands to benefit from improved trade relationships and the stability that comes with settled borders and normalized ties.

Peace agreements often stall in negotiation rooms, but this one is different because it's already transforming into lived experience. Someday soon, a generation will grow up in this region knowing only peace between neighbors.
