Army Commissions Tech Leaders From Meta, Reddit, OpenAI

The US Army is bringing Silicon Valley expertise directly into its ranks, and the partnership is already showing results.

This week, three technology executives took the oath of office and joined the Army's Executive Innovation Corps, known as Detachment 201. The new officers include Dane Knecht from Cloudflare, Sam Pullara from Sutter Hill Ventures, and Serkan Piantino, who helped create Facebook's AI research division and led products at Reddit.

The trio was commissioned at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia. They join a groundbreaking unit created specifically to help the Army navigate rapid changes in warfare technology, from autonomous systems to artificial intelligence.

Detachment 201 launched just months ago with four executives from companies including Meta, OpenAI, and Palantir. These reserve officers advise on critical challenges while maintaining their civilian careers, a balance made possible by the Army slashing its onboarding timeline from 18 months to just six.

"As the character of warfare evolves, the armed forces must rapidly adapt to new domains and prepare for continued technological change," Piantino said. "Those who have the experience to contribute to that mission have a duty to offer their service."
