Artemis II Crew Returns After 53 Years of Moon Missions

Twenty-four hours after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, four astronauts stood together at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, overwhelmed with emotion about their historic journey around the moon.

Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen completed the first crewed lunar mission in 53 years. The Artemis II crew traveled farther from Earth than any humans since 1972, spending 10 days circling the moon before returning home safely.

"It's a special thing to be human, and it's a special thing to be on planet Earth," Wiseman told the crowd. The four crew members hugged on stage, declaring themselves "bonded forever" by their shared experience.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman welcomed them home with pride. "After a brief 53-year intermission, the show goes on, and NASA is back in the business of sending astronauts to the moon and bringing them home safely," he said.

Glover struggled to find words big enough to capture what they witnessed. "The gratitude of seeing what we saw, doing what we did, and being with who I was with—it's too big to just be in one body," he reflected.

Koch shared how human connection bookended their cosmic journey. It started with their mission manager knocking on her crew quarters door whispering "We're go for launch" and ended with a nurse on the recovery ship asking for a hug after tucking her into bed.

Looking at Earth from deep space gave Koch a new perspective. She now thinks of our planet as a "lifeboat" floating in endless blackness, with everyone aboard working as one crew.

Hansen reminded the gathered crowd that the astronauts simply reflected the support of thousands of people who made the mission possible. "When you look up here, you're not looking at us. We are a mirror reflecting you," he said.

The crew's safe return proves humanity can still achieve extraordinary things when we work together. Their journey represents decades of preparation, collaboration across nations, and the collective dream of pushing beyond our planetary boundaries.
