Artist Carves Surreal Multi-Faced Sculptures From Single Wood Blocks

In a world increasingly filled with AI-generated images, Japanese artist Yoshitoshi Kanemaki is making a powerful statement with art that could only come from human hands and heart.

His wooden sculptures look impossible at first glance. Women with dozens of eyes, cascading faces showing different expressions, and extra fingers emerge from single blocks of camphor, cypress, and cherry wood. But these aren't glitches or errors.

Kanemaki carves each detail intentionally to express something deeply human: our hidden complexity. "I want to express the complexity of human emotion," he explains. "There is a person who appears normal on the surface, and then the hidden self is actually something else underneath."

The sculptures in his "Prism" series resemble reflections in broken mirrors or pages from a flip book, each face showing a slightly different emotion. The effect captures a striking range of human possibilities all at once.

Kanemaki creates both life-size figures and miniatures entirely from single wood blocks, then paints them in vivid colors. He draws inspiration from Buddhist statues, particularly depictions of arhats known for their deeply emotional expressions.

Most of his subjects come purely from imagination, with no models. But his current exhibition at Shibuya Parco features "Mirror Prism," based on actress Anna Yamada. After seeing her in a car commercial, Kanemaki became fascinated by her ability to play different roles and wondered about her true self beneath.

The exhibition, called "Emergence Entity," showcases his work in an accessible fourth-floor gallery nestled among fashion stores. There's no front door, just a reception desk, making art discovery as easy as wandering in on a whim.

Kanemaki's painstaking process celebrates what makes art profoundly human. His sculptures could never be replicated by AI because they emerge from genuine curiosity about the selves we hide from the world. Each cascading face and extra eye tells a truth about our inner lives that technology can't capture.
