ASU Adds $1M to Scholarships, Lowers Requirements

Angelo State University is opening the doors wider to higher education by making it easier for students to qualify for its top scholarship program while adding $1 million in annual funding.

The changes to the ASU Distinguished Scholarship Program take effect immediately for students entering in fall 2026. Both incoming freshmen and transfer students will benefit from the adjusted requirements, which lower the ACT and SAT score thresholds and adjust GPA requirements to include more deserving students.

The program receives its primary funding from the Carr Foundation, an endowment created when Robert and Nona Carr donated their West Texas oil and gas interests to the university. Since 1981, the foundation has grown into one of the largest endowments at any U.S. regional university.

Dr. Kerri Mikulik, assistant vice president for prospective student outreach, says the university reimagined its approach to help more students succeed. The goal goes beyond recruitment to ensuring students can graduate in four years or less with minimal debt.

Students don't need to apply separately for these scholarships. Every incoming freshman and transfer student is automatically considered, removing barriers that might discourage some from seeking financial aid.

Currently, 57% of all ASU undergraduates receive an ASU Distinguished Scholarship. Last year alone, the university awarded about $8 million through the program, and that number is set to grow.

The Ripple Effect

This expansion represents more than just financial aid. When students can afford college without crushing debt, they're free to focus on learning, graduating on time, and entering their careers without financial stress weighing them down.

The impact extends to families across West Texas who might have worried about affording higher education. Lower qualification requirements mean talented students who previously fell just short of eligibility now have a real shot at earning degrees.

Depending on their scholarship level, students can receive up to $52,000 over four years. That kind of support can mean the difference between abandoning college dreams and walking across the graduation stage debt-free.

New freshmen and transfer students for fall 2026 will receive their scholarship notifications in early February, with complete financial aid packages following in mid-February.

More students getting the education they deserve while avoiding crippling debt is a win worth celebrating.
