Athens Honors 22 Community Heroes and Student Scholars May 4

✨ Faith Restored

A free community celebration will recognize 22 students and local leaders who've quietly served Athens and Limestone County while overcoming challenges. The event spotlights first-generation college students balancing school, work, and family alongside longtime community contributors working behind the scenes.

Next Monday, Athens will gather to celebrate something rare: the people who serve without seeking the spotlight.

MTM Educational Enrichment is hosting its annual Unsung Hero Scholarship and Community Heroes Celebration on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church. The free event will honor 22 individuals making a difference across Limestone County.

Among those recognized are five MTM Unsung Hero Scholars, students who've achieved academic success while facing personal or financial obstacles. Many are first-generation college students juggling classes with work shifts and family responsibilities.

The celebration will also spotlight six MTM Cup recipients, one Kingdom Agent, and 10 Community Unsung Heroes. Athens City Council members Frank Travis and Jimmy Wayne Gill will receive special recognition, along with honorees Brennan Ashmore, Dymon Lockett, and Devin Howell.

"This event is about honoring those who serve quietly, lead faithfully, and persist through adversity," said Jannifer Matthews, organizer with MTM Educational Enrichment. "Our scholars and community heroes reflect the strength and spirit of Athens and Limestone County."

The evening will feature guest speaker Tabeckia Langford, a peer talk by Dalen Smith, and musical performances by JaCobe Hood and his ensemble. Kenny Anderson will serve as master of ceremonies.

The Ripple Effect

The scholarship program does more than recognize achievement. It sends a powerful message to students facing tough circumstances that their resilience matters and their community sees them.

For the longtime volunteers and advocates also being honored, the celebration validates years of behind-the-scenes work that often goes unnoticed. These aren't the people who post about their service on social media or seek headlines. They're the ones who show up consistently, year after year.

The event is presented in partnership with Athens Mayor William R. Marks and community supporters focused on youth development and educational equity. Organizers designed the celebration to bring neighbors together while highlighting both emerging student leaders and established contributors who quietly strengthen the community's foundation.

In a world that often celebrates the loudest voices, Athens is choosing to honor the steady hands that lift others up.
