Teacher Piuti Iakopo shopping for sports gear with student and Blues rugby player

Auckland Teacher Wins $5K for Helping Kids Through Sports

🦸 Hero Alert

A South Auckland teacher who spent five years helping students afford sports gear and transport just won $5,000 to keep making a difference. Piuti Iakopo coaches rugby and softball at Papatoetoe South School, where many families struggle with rising costs.

For five years, Piuti Iakopo has been the person who makes sure her students don't miss out on sports because they can't afford gear or transport to games.

The Papatoetoe South School teacher coaches tamariki across multiple rugby codes and softball, dedicating countless hours to building confidence and belonging through sport. When families can't cover the basics, she steps in to help however she can.

Last week, Iakopo became the first winner of the Kitted for Greatness award, receiving a $5,000 Dress Smart voucher to spend on sports equipment. The award, launched by Dress Smart Auckland in partnership with the Blues rugby team, recognizes grassroots coaches and volunteers who go above and beyond.

More than 100 people were nominated, but Iakopo stood out. She received numerous nominations from parents and community members who've watched her transform young lives through sport.

The timing carries extra meaning for Iakopo, who recently stepped away from teaching while expecting her first child. "Last term was my last tournament with my school," she told the Herald. "This is the first ever term I won't be coaching a sport, just so I can look after our little blessing on the way."

She brought past and present students to the award ceremony, many who've moved on from the school but still maintain close relationships with their former coach. "I also try and make the effort to watch their tournaments outside of school, just to build that relationship as well," Iakopo said.

Sunny's Take

Iakopo discovered her passion for coaching while running sports programs in a previous role, which led her into teaching. Now she's become something larger than just a coach.

"She's not just coaching. She's building a community," said Lauri Solecki, Dress Smart Onehunga centre manager. "She's helping these students to build self-worth and a sense of belonging."

As a woman in male-dominated sports, Iakopo serves as a powerful role model, especially for girls at her school. She gives her time, her effort, and often her own resources to ensure no child gets left behind.

Iakopo plans to return to coaching once she settles into life with her new baby, bringing the same dedication that earned her this recognition back to the field where it matters most.
