Australia Achieves First-Ever Ultra-Pure Fluorspar Production

Australia has unlocked a homegrown source of one of the world's most critical industrial minerals, producing ultra-pure fluorspar for the first time in the nation's history.

Mining company Tivan completed a groundbreaking trial in Western Australia that yielded 195 kilograms of premium fluorspar concentrate. The material tested at 98.6% purity, surpassing the industry standard of 97% and proving Australia can compete in this crucial global market.

Fluorspar might not be a household name, but it's essential for producing hydrofluoric acid, a key ingredient in everything from refrigerants to lithium batteries for electric vehicles. Right now, global supply is concentrated in just a handful of countries, creating vulnerability in supply chains for clean energy technology.

The trial took place at ALS Metallurgy in Balcatta as part of the Speewah Fluorite Project. Tivan partnered with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation and the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security to develop this domestic source.

The Ripple Effect

This success extends far beyond one mining project. Australia now has a proven pathway to produce critical minerals domestically, strengthening supply chains for renewable energy technology across the Asia-Pacific region.

Product samples are heading to 14 potential customers worldwide, with Japanese industries leading the interest. These companies need reliable, high-quality fluorspar sources to manufacture components for solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicle batteries.

The partnership demonstrates how international collaboration can solve supply chain challenges while creating economic opportunities. Japan gains a trusted regional supplier, while Australia builds new expertise in processing strategic minerals.

A larger 24-hour continuous operation is scheduled for later this year to validate commercial-scale production. The definitive feasibility study is already underway to determine the full mining and processing requirements.

This breakthrough arrives as nations worldwide prioritize securing domestic supplies of minerals essential for clean energy transitions and advanced manufacturing.
