Australia and Indonesia Sign Historic Security Treaty

Two nations separated by just a narrow sea have decided their future is stronger together.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto signed the Treaty of Jakarta on Friday, creating the most significant upgrade to their partnership in 30 years. The historic agreement commits both countries to consult on military responses if either faces an attack.

"We are more than just partners. We are close friends," Albanese told reporters in Jakarta after the ceremony. It was his fifth visit to Indonesia as prime minister, and he chose to return there immediately after winning re-election in 2025.

The treaty creates regular meetings between leaders and ministers from both countries. Senior Indonesian officials will now be able to work directly within the Australian Defence Force, building deeper connections between the two militaries.

President Prabowo emphasized that geography has given both nations a shared destiny. "Indonesia and Australia are destined to live side by side and we have chosen to establish that relationship founded on mutual trust and goodwill," he said.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong, traveling with Albanese, highlighted the importance of the agreement during uncertain global times. The pact demonstrates mutual respect and the priority both nations place on their relationship.

Beyond security, the two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding between their sovereign wealth funds to increase investment flowing both ways. Economic ties will grow alongside defense cooperation.
