Australia Backs 19 Clean Energy Projects Powering 4M Homes

Australia just took a massive step toward a cleaner future, backing 19 renewable energy projects that will generate enough power for more than 4 million households by 2030.

The projects, announced through the government's Capacity Investment Scheme, will deliver 7.8 gigawatts of solar and wind power across five states. That's 50% more than the original 5 gigawatt target, showing just how ready the private sector is to invest in clean energy.

Eight of the winning projects combine solar or wind farms with large batteries, creating hybrid systems that can store energy for when the sun isn't shining or wind isn't blowing. These batteries alone will add 7.9 gigawatt hours of storage capacity to Australia's grid.

Solar power is getting a major boost, with almost 2.5 gigawatts coming from photovoltaic projects. Standout winners include a 200 megawatt solar farm in Tasmania and multiple projects across Queensland and New South Wales that pair solar panels with massive battery systems.

One of the largest is the Birriwa project in New South Wales, combining 600 megawatts of solar generation with a 2,400 megawatt hour battery. Another NSW project, Gundary, will deliver 320 megawatts of solar paired with a 1,391 megawatt hour battery.

The projects are attracting $12 billion in private investment from companies across the globe, including developers from Malaysia, Spain, the Philippines, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. That international interest shows how attractive Australia's renewable energy market has become.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen emphasized that this initiative goes beyond just adding clean power to the grid. The projects will create an estimated 19,000 construction jobs and use $257 million worth of Australian steel, putting money directly into local communities.

The Ripple Effect

The winning companies have committed nearly $1.2 billion to social programs that will benefit the communities hosting these projects. That means local schools, infrastructure improvements, and community programs funded by the renewable energy transition.

The Capacity Investment Scheme works by giving developers long term revenue guarantees through competitive auctions. This reduces investment risk and encourages companies to commit billions to projects that might otherwise seem too uncertain.

Australia isn't slowing down either. The government is opening registration this week for another tender targeting 5 gigawatts of renewable generation capacity, with bids due in July 2026.

Together, these initiatives are transforming Australia's energy landscape from one dependent on fossil fuels to one powered increasingly by sunshine and wind, all while creating thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity across regional communities.
