Australia Backs 19 Clean Energy Projects to Power 4M Homes
Australia just approved 19 renewable energy projects that will generate enough clean electricity to power more than 4 million homes by 2030. The $12 billion investment will create 19,000 construction jobs while delivering cheaper power across five states.
Australia is making a massive leap toward cleaner, cheaper energy with the approval of 19 renewable projects that will transform how millions get their power.
The government's latest Capacity Investment Scheme announced winners that will deliver 7.8 gigawatts of renewable generation. That's enough electricity to keep the lights on in more than 4 million households across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Tasmania.
The tender originally aimed for 5 gigawatts but attracted so much quality interest that officials approved projects exceeding that target. Eight of the 19 winners are hybrid projects that pair solar or wind farms with battery storage, addressing one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: keeping power flowing when the sun sets or wind stops.
Solar farms will contribute nearly 2.5 gigawatts to the total. Projects range from the 200 megawatt Weasel Solar Farm in Tasmania to six hybrid projects that combine solar panels with massive battery banks capable of storing thousands of megawatt hours.
The Birriwa project in New South Wales stands out with its 600 megawatt solar farm paired with a 2,400 megawatt hour battery. That combination means it can generate power during the day and store enough to supply thousands of homes through the night.

Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen emphasized that these aren't just about generating electricity. The projects will unlock an estimated $12 billion in private investment and create approximately 19,000 construction jobs in regional communities.
The Ripple Effect
The benefits extend far beyond clean electrons flowing through power lines. Winning companies committed nearly $1.2 billion to social programs benefiting local communities where these projects will be built.
Construction teams will use $257 million worth of Australian steel, supporting domestic manufacturing. Regional towns hosting these facilities will see economic activity surge during construction and benefit from ongoing operations for decades.
The projects also give electricity consumers something to celebrate: cheaper power bills. The revenue guarantee mechanism reduces investment risk, which translates to lower costs that get passed on to households and businesses.
All 19 projects are expected to be operational by 2030, joining more than 5.5 gigawatts of wind generation already in the pipeline. Together, they represent Australia's commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels while keeping energy affordable and reliable.
The government is already preparing the next round, with Tender 9 targeting another 5 gigawatts of renewable generation opening this week. Applications close in July 2026, signaling that Australia's clean energy momentum isn't slowing down anytime soon.
