Australia Hits 51% Renewable Energy as Battery Boom Grows

Australia just crossed a threshold that seemed impossible a decade ago: renewable energy now supplies more than half the nation's electricity.

In the final quarter of 2025, renewables including battery storage accounted for 51% of all power flowing through Australia's National Electricity Market. That's up from 46% just one year earlier, marking the first time clean energy sources have powered the majority of the grid.

The shift brought immediate relief to households and businesses. Wholesale electricity prices plummeted to an average of $35 per megawatt hour, nearly half the price from the same period in 2024. The Australian Energy Market Operator credits record renewable generation and increased battery storage deployment for driving prices down.

Behind this milestone sits an even bigger story about what's coming next. Battery storage projects now represent 46% of Australia's massive 64 gigawatt energy development pipeline. When combined with hybrid solar battery projects, batteries account for roughly 42 gigawatts of planned capacity.

That dominance reflects a fundamental shift in how Australia is building its energy future. Battery projects have surged 150% year over year, transforming from a supporting player to the leading force in new energy investments.

The technology is evolving beyond simple storage. Nearly a hundred projects in the pipeline incorporate grid forming capabilities, advanced systems that can provide the stability services traditionally handled by coal and gas plants. This means batteries aren't just storing excess solar and wind power anymore, they're actively keeping the grid balanced and reliable.

The Ripple Effect

Solar and wind farms are feeding this transformation with record output. Grid scale solar and wind generation reached a quarterly average of 6,627 megawatts, up 23% from the previous year. Wind generation alone jumped 29% while solar climbed 15%.

Western Australia hit its own milestone, with renewables delivering an average of 52.4% of electricity generation. During peak periods, clean energy supplied 91% of demand in the western grid.

Hybrid solar battery projects are becoming especially popular in the development pipeline, representing nearly 20% of planned capacity. These co-located facilities capture solar energy during the day and dispatch it during evening demand peaks, improving both revenue potential and grid stability.

The momentum shows no signs of slowing. Wind projects account for 16% of the pipeline, solar at 12%, hydro at 5%, and gas at just 1.4%. The market has clearly chosen its path forward, and it runs on sunshine, wind, and batteries.

Australia is proving that a renewable powered grid isn't just possible, it's profitable and reliable.
