Australia has never had cross-country skiers reach an Olympic final until today, when Lars Young Vik and Hugo Hinckfuss changed everything in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

The duo qualified ninth overall in the team sprint event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, securing their spot among the top 15 nations needed to advance. They went on to finish 14th in the final, marking a breakthrough moment for a country not traditionally known for Nordic skiing success.

Young Vik admitted his nerves nearly got the best of him during the first leg. "I was thinking, 'Am I fast enough?'" he said. But he trusted his training and pushed hard over the two toughest hills on the course, delivering exactly what his team needed.

His partner Hinckfuss was overwhelmed watching from the sidelines. "Lars did everything," he said. "Seeing him on that first leg, he really set the standard for us as a country."

The result meant even more because of the struggles leading up to this moment. "We've been waiting for this day for four years," Hinckfuss explained. "The Olympics haven't gone how we hoped, and our motto was, 'Save the season.' Today we're saving the season."

The Australian women's team of Rosie Fordham and Phoebe Cridland placed 18th in qualifying after Cridland took an unlucky fall in the finishing straight. Still, they showed strong form throughout their race, building on the momentum their country is creating in the sport.

Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won his fifth gold medal of these Games in the men's event, while Sweden took gold in the women's race. But for Australia, the real victory was simply being there among the world's best.
