Australia Slashes Power Bills With Free Daytime Electricity

Imagine getting three hours of free electricity every single day while your energy bills drop instead of climb. That's the reality for millions of Australians right now, while American households struggle with skyrocketing power costs.

Australia's wholesale electricity prices fell nearly 50% over the past year. Meanwhile, U.S. home electric bills surged at twice the rate of inflation, with prices expected to jump 40% higher by 2030 in some areas.

Australians installed over 1,000 home batteries every single day for the first three weeks. Since the program started, more than 500,000 home batteries have been connected to the grid in just eight months.

Here's how it works. During sunny days, rooftop solar panels generate power that gets stored in home batteries. When everyone comes home around 6 p.m. and turns on their TVs and appliances, those batteries kick in instead of expensive gas power plants.

"This is about avoiding the 6 p.m. peak when everyone gets home and turns on the TV, which is when the whole electricity network is stressed," says Saul Griffith, cofounder of Rewiring Australia. "And that's a perfect job for batteries."

Griffith previously cofounded Rewiring America and helped shape parts of the Inflation Reduction Act before returning to his native Australia during the pandemic. His modeling showed Australian policymakers that batteries were the smartest way to replace aging coal power plants.

The math is simple but powerful. Utilities no longer need to fire up their most expensive power plants during peak hours because so many homes now run on stored solar energy. Those savings get passed down through lower wholesale prices.

The benefits extend far beyond individual electric bills. As more homes disconnect from the grid during expensive peak hours, the entire system becomes more stable and affordable for everyone.

One in three American households currently struggle to pay their energy bills. Australia's approach shows there's a different path forward, one where renewable energy and smart storage actually make power cheaper instead of more expensive.

The program also helps Australia phase out unreliable coal plants faster than expected. Batteries smooth out the ups and downs of renewable energy, making the transition cleaner without sacrificing reliability or affordability.
