Australia Smashes Renewable Energy Records in Q4 2025

Australia just proved its clean energy transition is working, and the numbers are stunning.

The final quarter of 2025 shattered every renewable energy record on the books. Nine new wind and solar farms flipped the switch, delivering 2.1 gigawatts of power. That's enough clean electricity to power at least 1.4 million homes.

The achievement smashed the previous quarterly record of 1.3 gigawatts set back in 2021. Even more impressive, 63% of all renewable capacity added during 2025 came online in just those final three months.

Battery storage hit breakthrough levels too. Australia added 1 gigawatt of new battery capacity in Q4 alone, more than tripling the record set just one quarter earlier. The year's total battery additions surpassed the combined output of the previous eight years.

Clean Energy Council CEO Jackie Trad celebrated the milestone. "As more renewable projects come online, we're seeing them do exactly what they're designed to do: stabilize the energy system as coal-fired generators retire," she said.

The timing couldn't be better. During January's brutal heatwaves, when air conditioners pushed the grid to its limits, renewables supplied up to 77% of peak demand. For the entire quarter, renewable energy provided over half of all electricity in the National Electricity Market for the first time ever.

Investment money is flowing back into clean energy projects. Five new renewable projects reached financial close in Q4, representing 1.2 gigawatts and $3.5 billion in value. That's the second-highest investment total ever recorded in a single quarter.

The Ripple Effect

South Australia is leading the pack with the fastest project delivery times. Solar farms take just 19 months from financial commitment to powering homes, while wind farms need 23 months. Victoria matched SA's impressive 20-month timeline for battery projects.

Queensland commissioned the most projects with four new clean energy facilities, though the state still has the longest approval timelines. The difference shows how streamlined planning and faster grid connections can accelerate the transition.

The success proves a critical point: Australia can replace retiring coal plants with reliable renewable energy while keeping electricity flowing during the toughest conditions. Every new solar panel and wind turbine brings the country closer to a cleaner, more stable energy future.
