Australia Smashes Solar Investment Record by 30%
Australia just broke its annual solar investment record with three months still left in the year, as households and businesses rush to embrace renewable energy. The country added enough solar capacity this year to power millions of homes.
Australia's renewable energy boom just hit a milestone that even experts didn't see coming this fast.
Investment in large-scale solar projects reached 3.5 gigawatts this year, shattering the previous annual record by 30%. The September quarter alone brought in 1 gigawatt of final investment decisions, following 2 gigawatts in the second quarter. With three months still to go, investors are betting big on Australia's clean energy future.
But the real story is happening on rooftops across the country. Homeowners installed 90,042 new solar systems in just the September quarter, adding 894 megawatts of capacity. That's 35% more than the same period last year.
The momentum keeps building. Australia has already added 2.8 gigawatts of rooftop solar in 2026, nearly matching all of 2025 with a full quarter remaining. More than 13 gigawatts of small-scale solar has been installed since 2022, turning ordinary homes into power stations.
Home batteries are experiencing their own revolution. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has tripled approved capacity during 2026, jumping from 5 gigawatt-hours at year's start to 15.3 gigawatt-hours by September. Total home battery capacity now stands five times higher than when the program launched in July 2025.

New South Wales leads the battery charge with 5.6 gigawatt-hours of approved capacity, followed by Victoria and Queensland at about 3.2 gigawatt-hours each. About half of these batteries are retrofits to existing solar systems, while the other half accompany new installations.
The Ripple Effect
This surge in renewable energy is reshaping Australia's entire power grid. Last month, renewable sources generated more electricity than fossil fuels for the first time. That's not a one-day achievement or a lucky break. It's the result of thousands of households and businesses making the switch.
Federal Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen calls it "what progress looks like." He points to clear government policies that give investors confidence and make clean energy accessible to everyday Australians.
The numbers tell a story of collective action. Every rooftop panel and home battery adds up, creating a cleaner grid that benefits everyone. When your neighbor installs solar, it helps stabilize electricity prices and reduces emissions for the whole community.
Investors see the momentum too. Large-scale renewable projects reaching final investment decision totaled 5 gigawatts through October, surpassing the previous full-year record of 4.9 gigawatts. Since 2022, nearly 17 gigawatts of large-scale renewable capacity has received approval.
Australia is proving that the transition to clean energy doesn't require sacrifice or waiting for perfect technology. It's happening right now, one rooftop at a time, building a grid that works better for everyone.
