Australia just took a significant step toward protecting the word "organic" on grocery store shelves.

The federal government announced in April 2026 it will work with industry stakeholders to develop domestic regulation for organic food labeling. Australian Organic Limited called the announcement "the clearest signal we have seen from the federal government in many years." CEO Jackie Brian noted the current free-for-all system has undermined consumer confidence and left honest farmers at a disadvantage.

Right now, certified organic farmers invest time and money meeting rigorous standards while competing against companies that simply choose to use the organic label without any verification process.
