Australian Bishop Named Top Vatican Legal Expert

A New South Wales bishop is heading to Rome to become the most senior Australian voice at the Vatican since 2019.

Pope Leo XIV just appointed Anthony Randazzo, currently bishop of Broken Bay, as the Catholic Church's chief legal interpreter. He'll oversee how church laws apply across the globe as Prefect of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts.

The role puts Randazzo at the heart of Vatican decision-making. His office ensures that Catholic canon law gets applied correctly in every corner of the world, from small parishes to major dioceses.

Randazzo's journey to this moment started in Sydney, where he was born, then continued through Queensland and Brisbane. After his ordination in 1991, he pursued advanced studies in canon law at Rome's Pontifical Gregorian University, setting the foundation for his legal expertise.

He already spent five years working at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, one of the Vatican's most influential departments. That experience gave him deep knowledge of how the Church's central administration operates.

At 59, Randazzo has been leading the Broken Bay diocese since 2019, covering Sydney's northern beaches and the Central Coast. He also serves as president of the Federation of Catholic Bishops' Conferences of Oceania, representing the region's Catholic leadership.

The Ripple Effect

This appointment strengthens Australia's connection to global Catholic leadership at a meaningful time. The pope plans to visit Australia in 2028, marking the first papal visit in 20 years.

Having an Australian in such a senior Vatican role means local perspectives and challenges will reach the highest levels of church decision-making. Randazzo's legal background positions him to shape how modern challenges get addressed through church law.

He met with Pope Leo at the Vatican earlier this month to discuss the appointment. In a social media statement, Randazzo said he felt "profoundly grateful" for the trust placed in him and asked for prayers as he prepares for the transition.

The newly appointed archbishop will spend the next three months wrapping up his work in Broken Bay before moving to Rome permanently. His expertise in canon law and administrative experience make him well-suited for interpreting and applying church legislation across diverse cultural contexts worldwide.
