Australian Food Makers Cut Emissions and Save Millions

Australian food manufacturers are proving that going green doesn't mean choosing between the planet and profit.

Companies across the country are installing heat pumps, electric boilers, and energy storage systems that are cutting both emissions and operating costs. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency reports these technologies work particularly well for food production because most processes like cooking, cleaning, and refrigeration operate at relatively low temperatures.

The results speak for themselves. Hardwick Meatworks in Kyneton, Victoria installed a heat pump system that now saves the facility $480,000 every year in energy costs while eliminating 1,040 tonnes of carbon emissions. The family-owned meat processor made the switch with support from ARENA, upgrading their electrical system to reduce dependence on natural gas.

Other food giants are jumping on board with their own innovations. Treasury Wine Estates is testing electrified heating systems at its Barossa Valley operations. McCain Foods is exploring technology that captures and reuses waste heat from its production lines, turning energy that once escaped into the air back into useful power.

Even feasibility studies are revealing enormous potential. At a George Weston Foods facility in Castlemaine, engineers identified refrigeration and heating upgrades that could save over $600,000 annually while cutting natural gas use by nearly a quarter.

The Ripple Effect

What started as isolated pilot projects is becoming an industry-wide transformation. As more manufacturers share their data and real-world results, the path forward becomes clearer for others considering similar upgrades.

The benefits extend beyond carbon reduction. Companies are seeing better temperature control, more reliable operations, and protection from volatile gas prices. By timing installations with regular maintenance cycles, facilities can integrate new systems without major disruptions.

ARENA continues supporting this shift through its Industrial Transformation Stream, which funds demonstration projects that prove these technologies work in real manufacturing environments. Round 3 of the funding program is currently accepting applications from businesses ready to lead the next wave of industrial innovation.
