Australian Gold Mine Runs 6.5 Days on Pure Renewable Power

Last month, something remarkable happened in the Australian outback that could change mining forever.

For 155 consecutive hours, Bellevue Gold's mine ran entirely on renewable energy. No diesel generators. No fossil fuels. Just sun, wind, and batteries keeping the operation humming for nearly a week straight.

The mine's hybrid power station combines 27 megawatts of solar panels, 24 megawatts of wind turbines, and a 15-megawatt battery system. Engineers originally designed it to meet 80% of the site's energy needs, but the system just proved it can deliver even more.

"We've put out a strategy that's ahead of the market that will have us producing net zero carbon gold by 2026," said Bellevue Gold's managing director Darren Stralow. He called the achievement a significant milestone for what's possible in the Australian energy sector.

The $252 million project launched in 2022 when Bellevue partnered with Zenith Energy to become the first operational gold mine powered primarily by renewables. Steve Parsons from Bellevue says the setup achieves "the holy grail of lower emissions and a direct cost reduction in power generation."

The numbers back him up. The mine is positioned to become one of Australia's most sustainable and financially successful gold operations.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough reaches beyond one mine's balance sheet. The project advances a joint venture between Zenith Energy and Tjiwarl Contracting Services, which represents the Tjiwarl Aboriginal Corporation. They're the traditional owners of the land where Bellevue operates.

The partnership shows how clean energy projects can honor Indigenous communities while building a greener future. It's creating jobs, reducing emissions, and proving that heavy industry doesn't have to choose between profitability and sustainability.

Other mining companies are watching closely. If Bellevue can run on 100% renewable power for days at a time, the entire industry might follow.
