Australian Runner Caldwell Breaks Out With Diamond League Bronze

Abbey Caldwell stepped onto the Diamond League podium for the first time in her career, and she did it by rewriting her own limits.

The 24-year-old Australian runner finished third in the 1,500-meter final in Shanghai, China, clocking an incredible 3:56.12. That time made her the second-fastest Australian woman in history at the distance, and she cut a massive three seconds off her previous personal best to get there.

"I honestly didn't think even mid-race it would be that good," Caldwell said after the race. The 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist had known she was fit, but translating training into competition at this level proved she's ready for the world stage.

Ethiopia's Birke Haylom won the race in 3:55.56, with compatriot Tsige Duguma taking silver at 3:55.71. But the real story was the depth of Australian talent on display.

Five Australian women competed in the final, creating a home-country showdown within the international competition. Caldwell beat out Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull (who finished sixth), Sarah Billings (eighth), national champion Claudia Hollingsworth (ninth), and Linden Hall (10th).

The race saw Hull leading at the 1,200-meter mark before a blistering final stretch that saw six runners surpass the season's previous best time. Coming off Australia's domestic season, Caldwell felt race-ready and it showed.

And with athletes still in heavy training this early in the season, the performances suggest even bigger things ahead as they lighten their workload and freshen up for championship meets.
