Australian Street Becomes Global Sensation on Social Media
A quiet coastal street in Gerringong, Australia has transformed into a weekend tourist hotspot after social media influencers discovered its stunning ocean views. The influx is bringing unexpected economic benefits to the small town's businesses.
A sleepy residential street in a small Australian beach town now attracts busloads of international tourists every weekend, and locals are calling it "Australia's most beautiful street."
Tasman Drive in Gerringong, New South Wales sits just 90 minutes south of Sydney with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Twelve months ago, hardly anyone outside the area knew it existed.
Then social media influencers found it. Now the street regularly gridlocks on weekend afternoons as hundreds of visitors arrive daily to snap photos and videos for Instagram, TikTok, and Chinese platform Douyin.
Kevin Dale has lived on Tasman Drive for 12 years and watches the transformation unfold outside his window each weekend. He now does his shopping before lunch to avoid the afternoon crowds.
"After lunch, you won't be able to move here," Dale said. "There are busloads of tourists coming down, and it's just incredible."
While some visitors occasionally cross property boundaries or compete for parking spots, Dale welcomes sharing the view. Many tourists travel from overseas, and he's happy they leave with a positive impression of Australia.
The Ripple Effect
The viral fame is delivering real economic wins to Gerringong's small business community. Melissa Matters, who owns a local restaurant and cafe, said the tourist boom helped her business survive last year's typically slow winter months.
"I don't think we've specifically targeted the type of tourists coming to Tasman Drive, but we have definitely noticed an increase in visitors," said Matters, who also serves as deputy mayor of Kiama Council.
Chinese tourists Seven and Ivy stopped at Tasman Drive during their Sydney to Melbourne road trip after discovering the street on Douyin, where they have over 40,000 followers. They've now visited twice and shared photos with family and friends back home.
"We have a blue sky and a beautiful sea view. We feel very relaxed here," Seven said.
One Instagram video of the street has racked up 37.8 million views. Resident Ross MacAndrew was scrolling through YouTube when he spotted his own street appearing in American travel videos.
"It bemuses me that a little town like this is suddenly appearing on American YouTube clips out of the blue," MacAndrew said. The tourism wave keeps growing rather than slowing down, and the council is now considering weekend traffic control measures to manage the popularity.
