Gout Gout blazed through the 200 meters in 19.67 seconds at Australia's national championships in Sydney on Sunday. The time beats the legendary Jamaican sprinter's 19.93 from 2004, when Bolt was also 18 years old.

This wasn't just a personal victory for Gout. His training partner Aidan Murphy also broke the 20-second barrier with a time of 19.88, making history as two Australians went sub-20 in the same race.

"This is what I've been waiting for," Gout said after the race. Born in Queensland to parents from South Sudan, he's been turning heads since 2024 when he set a national record as a 16-year-old.

Sunday's performance marked another milestone for the young athlete. Last season he ran 19.84, but that time was wind-assisted and didn't count as an official record. This time, the numbers were completely legal.

"There's a big weight off my shoulders knowing I ran it legally," Gout explained. "I have the speed and my body to run times like that."

His time would have earned him a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. That's not a hypothetical achievement for some distant future. That's right now, as a teenager still competing in youth categories.
