Australia's Diamonds Chase Historic Netball Double

Australia's Diamonds netball team is about to attempt something even their greatest champions never managed.

Next month in Glasgow, coach Stacey Marinkovich will lead her squad in pursuit of back-to-back Commonwealth Games and World Cup gold medals. No Australian netball team has ever defended both titles in consecutive major tournaments.

The challenge is massive. Marinkovich will have just four training sessions in Melbourne and four more in Edinburgh before competition starts.

"I think this is the most intense, most competitive international netball has been," Marinkovich said. The global gap is closing fast, with England, Jamaica, and New Zealand all capable of defeating Australia on any given day.

Marinkovich knows pressure intimately. She grew up in Brisbane dreaming of wearing the green and gold, idolizing Australian greats like Vicki Wilson. Her father remembers her asking about joining the national team after just her second training session as a kid.

Now she's the one making dreams come true. This week, she named an 18-player Diamonds squad that will be cut to 12 for Glasgow. Those phone calls, she says, are the toughest part of the job.

"You're making players' dreams come true by saying you're in and then you're pretty much taking that dream away when you're having to make the other call," she explained. Every conversation requires honesty and respect for the enormous investment each athlete makes.

Sophie Dwyer, who debuted under Marinkovich four years ago, says the feedback is constant. Even during the domestic Super Netball season, Marinkovich stays connected with her players, helping them evolve their game.

The Diamonds open against Tonga before facing England just 24 hours later. There's no easing into this tournament and no room for error across seven potential matches in nine days.

Marinkovich embraces the weight of expectation. Every Diamonds generation is expected to win, and she's determined this one will make history doing it.
