But saving lives is just one part of OPAL's story. The reactor also treats pure silicon cylinders that end up in electronics that absolutely cannot fail: electric trains, hospital equipment, power grids, and air conditioning systems.
ANSTO captures 60 percent of the global market for this high-grade irradiated silicon. The nuclear treatment converts some silicon atoms to phosphorus, creating a more reliable product for high-voltage systems.
"We do this highly reliable product that affects people's lives every day, but you probably never know it's there," Jenkinson said.
The Ripple Effect
Next to the reactor sits the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering, where researchers use neutrons to study materials in ways other methods can't. Their battery research discovered something practical: charging your phone beyond 90 percent changes the crystal structure and reduces battery lifetime.
"Don't overcharge your phone or leave it on charge overnight," said senior instrument scientist Kirrily Rule. Her team partners with battery companies and even Sydney Trains to study how rail tracks change structure on hot or cold days.
Nathan Markovski, who started as an apprentice in 2012 and now operates the reactor, loves the hidden nature of the work. "It works under the radar, and you almost feel quite stealthy in your job because a lot of people don't know where the nuclear medicine comes from," he said.
People drive past the dense bushland without a second thought. But inside, Australia's only nuclear fission reaction runs continuously, turning violent physics into an elegant system that quietly keeps the country healthy.
