Austria Launches Home Battery That Works in Extreme Cold
An Austrian company just released the first sodium-ion home battery system that keeps working at temperatures as low as -30°C. The affordable technology could transform energy storage in cold climates where traditional batteries struggle.
Home batteries just got tougher thanks to a breakthrough from Austria that works in freezing temperatures where lithium systems fail.
Accupower, a company based in Graz, Austria, has launched Natec Home, the first residential battery storage system using sodium-ion technology designed entirely in Austria. The 7.68 kWh system costs €3,990 ($4,625), matching the price of conventional lithium batteries while offering some surprising advantages.
The game changer is how it handles extreme temperatures. While most home batteries lose significant power in cold weather, Natec Home operates from -30°C to 50°C and keeps 90% of its performance even below freezing. That means homeowners in cold climates can install it outdoors without expensive heating systems or climate controls.
The battery connects to home solar panels and provides backup power during outages. Up to 15 units can link together for larger homes or small businesses that need more storage capacity.

Durability is another standout feature. The system should last 20 to 25 years with 8,000 charging cycles while maintaining at least 80% of its original capacity. A built-in monitoring system continuously tracks charge levels, prevents overcharging, and manages temperature to protect the battery's lifespan.
The technology uses sodium instead of lithium, which makes it safer and more thermally stable. Sodium is also far more abundant than lithium, which could help address supply chain concerns as battery demand grows globally.
Accupower started making these batteries in April 2025 after perfecting sodium-ion technology for industrial uses. The company is already expanding the product line with a smaller battery for vehicles, boats, and RVs, plus large container-sized systems for off-grid locations coming in mid-2026.
The Ripple Effect
Austria's innovation adds momentum to Europe's push for battery independence. The European Economic and Social Committee recently announced it will prioritize sodium batteries in its industrial strategy, calling for rapid action to support the technology.
As more European manufacturers develop sodium-ion batteries, the continent moves closer to building its own sustainable energy storage industry. For homeowners in cold climates who thought solar plus storage wasn't practical, this Austrian breakthrough just opened new possibilities.
