Austrian Skier Wins Home Race After Tough Personal Season

Manuel Feller fought back tears as he became the first Austrian to win the Kitzbuehel slalom in seven years, ending a season that had tested him in every way possible.

The 33-year-old Alpine skier hadn't finished in the top 10 all season and had faced personal challenges off the slopes. But on Sunday, in front of his home crowd in Austria, Feller delivered a stunning comeback performance.

Starting the second run in fourth place, Feller found what he called "the perfect flow." He beat Switzerland's Loic Meillard by 0.35 seconds over two runs to claim his seventh career World Cup victory.

"So good for me after such a horrible start to the season," Feller said after crossing the finish line. "Also privately a really tough period of my life. I just kept on fighting as I've always done and today everything paid off."

Meillard had dominated the first run, finishing nearly half a second faster than anyone else. But he struggled in his second attempt, placing only 17th and giving Feller the opening he needed.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Austrian skiing fans. The last time an Austrian won the slalom at Kitzbuehel was Marcel Hirscher in 2017, making Feller's triumph a long-awaited homecoming moment.

Feller's win shows that persistence through difficult times can lead to breakthrough moments. When both his skiing and personal life felt overwhelming, he chose to keep showing up and putting in the work.

Germany's Linus Strasser rounded out the podium in third place. Norwegian-born Brazilian skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen finished fourth after the second-fastest final run of the day.

The men's circuit has one more slalom scheduled in Schladming before next month's Milano Cortina Olympics, giving Feller momentum heading into the biggest competition of the season.
