Author Turns Her Backyard Into Children's Book World

A children's author has created an enchanting world for young readers without leaving her own backyard.

Kim Wild's new book "Moonbeam Way" invites children into a magical universe inspired by her actual four-acre meadow, greenhouse, woodland animals, and family memories. The story follows tiny glowing Firelites, a protective buck, and Midnight the cat, who longs to find where she belongs.

Wild's creative process blends reality with imagination in an innovative way. She photographs real objects from her property, including fairy houses she built herself, deer that visit regularly, and her greenhouse, then transforms these images into illustrations that bring the story to life.

The inspiration struck six years ago when Wild received her greenhouse as a gift. She immediately imagined it could become the foundation for children's stories that celebrate the natural world.

Real-life characters populate her fictional meadow. Miss Bluebeary, a bear cub living beneath a Douglas Fir tree on Wild's property, appears in the books alongside her forever puppy Echo and the honeybees that visit her flowers. Even a little boy singing in "Moonbeam Way" was inspired by Wild's grandson.

About 95 percent of the illustrations originate from something real in Wild's world. She emphasizes that while AI helps transform her photographs into magical artwork, it plays no role in writing the stories themselves.

The books encourage children to spend as much time exploring the pictures as reading the words. Hidden details throughout the pages reward repeated viewing, giving young readers new discoveries each time they return to the story.
