Baby Osprey Survives 55-Foot Fall in Hampton Bays

When a baby osprey fell 55 feet from its nest on a light pole at Hampton Bays High School, the odds of survival looked grim. But this little bird got incredibly lucky when an entire community sprang into action.

The osprey chick, practicing flight moves that prepare young birds for their first takeoff, tumbled from its perch in Hampton Bays, New York. Within hours, three local organizations coordinated a rescue that would make any wildlife lover smile.

The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Southampton Town Highway Department, and Hampton Bays School District worked together to bring the young bird back home. Using a bucket truck, rescuers lifted the chick back up to its nest and gave it a full health check.

The team named him Bubba, honoring beloved community member Michael DeRosa. Veterinarians examined Bubba and found zero injuries from his dramatic fall, so he skipped rehabilitation entirely and went straight back to his nest.

The best part came just moments later when Bubba's mother returned to the nest. She immediately resumed caring for her chick as if nothing had happened, confirming the rescue was a complete success.

Falls happen because learning to fly is risky business, but most young birds aren't this fortunate. Bubba got a second chance because people cared enough to make three organizations work together on a Tuesday afternoon.
