Baltimore Rescues Save 367 Birds from Pet Shop Seizure

When Amy Creel answered her phone last week, she never expected the emergency call would be about birds. As president of Knine Rescue, a dog-focused organization in Baltimore, she was used to helping canines in crisis, not exotic parrots and finches.

But when BARCS Animal Shelter called asking for help with hundreds of birds seized from unsafe conditions, Creel didn't hesitate. "They said we need to call in a favor," she explained. "We need all hands on deck."

Baltimore animal control officers had responded to a complaint about Loros Exoticos Baltimore, a pet shop on Eastern Avenue. Inside, they found more than 350 birds living in unsanitary conditions and needing immediate medical care. Officers removed 47 birds that Friday, then returned Wednesday to seize approximately 320 more.

Knine Rescue took in nearly 90 of the birds, stepping completely outside their comfort zone. With no avian expertise on staff, Creel and her team had to learn fast. They placed every bird in foster homes within days.

The community response made the impossible possible. Neighbors donated cages, food, and supplies as word spread about the rescue effort. A retired veterinarian even volunteered to come on-site and assess each bird's health.

Not every story has a happy ending. Some birds were too sick to survive, having suffered in poor conditions for too long. Others required emergency veterinary care and continue receiving treatment for their health issues.

This story shows what happens when communities put compassion first, even when the call for help looks different than expected. Creel and her team could have said no, could have stuck to what they know. Instead, they said yes to learning something new to save lives that needed saving.

The ripples keep spreading. BARCS Animal Shelter and Knine Rescue are still raising funds to cover medical costs for the birds. Many of the healthier birds are already available for adoption, ready to find loving forever homes after their ordeal.
