Bangladesh Building Largest Solar Farm to Power 685 Acres

Bangladesh is turning 685 acres of land into what will become the country's largest solar power plant, a massive renewable energy project that signals hope for a nation grappling with energy shortages.

The Bangladesh Power Development Board announced plans for a 442 MW solar facility near Rampal in the southwestern Khulna region. With a $200 million price tag, the project represents a significant commitment to clean energy in a country where coal and natural gas have long dominated the power grid.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Bangladesh currently faces regular power outages linked to global energy tensions, leaving homes and businesses in the dark. Solar energy offers a path forward that doesn't depend on volatile international fuel markets.

The new facility will generate electricity at just $0.05 per kilowatt hour, making it cheaper than previous solar projects in the country. Lower construction costs at the Rampal site mean more affordable clean energy for Bangladeshi families and businesses.

The government plans to fund 85% of the project through its Power Development Fund, with the remaining 15% coming from the power board's own resources. A new transmission line will connect the solar plant to the existing grid just 1.5 kilometers away.

The Ripple Effect

This single project could transform Bangladesh's energy landscape. The country currently generates about 1,405 MW from solar power across all its facilities, meaning this one installation will increase national solar capacity by nearly a third.

Bangladesh has set ambitious targets under its Renewable Energy Policy 2025. The government aims to source 20% of electricity from renewables by 2030 and 30% by 2040, up from current levels that rely heavily on imported fossil fuels.

Energy experts believe faster approval of additional solar projects could prevent future blackouts entirely. Mostafa Al Mahmud, president of the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association, notes that greater renewable emphasis could have already mitigated current energy challenges.

The solar facility will rise near a coal power plant currently under construction, creating a visual reminder of Bangladesh's energy transition in real time. Clean energy advocates hope this project opens the door for even more renewable installations across the nation's 56,000 square miles.
