A Bay Area energy company just hit a milestone that's getting thousands of people out of cars and onto electric bikes. Ava Community Energy has now distributed over 15,000 e-bike rebates, and riders have already pedaled more than a million miles.

The Ava Bike Electric program isn't just handing out vouchers online. Rebates can only be used at local bike shops, keeping money in the community and giving riders a trusted place to go for repairs and maintenance.

The results speak for themselves. In just nine months, participants logged approximately 1,079,000 miles on their e-bikes. That's roughly 43 trips around the entire Earth.

Even better, 62% of riders report driving less now. They're using their e-bikes for commutes, errands, and trips around town that used to require a car.

Howard Chang, CEO of Ava Community Energy, says e-bikes are becoming the first electric vehicle for many households. The upfront cost, maintenance, and parking are far less than any car, and riders can get started without a steep learning curve.

Local bike shops are seeing the impact firsthand. Families are using e-bikes to transport kids to school. Some households are replacing entire cars with cargo e-bikes to handle bigger loads.

One shop even reported that an Army veteran used their rebate to get back into cycling despite physical limitations. The electric assist opened up riding again when traditional bikes couldn't.

The Ripple Effect

The program is doing more than putting people on bikes. It's breathing new life into local bike shops that now see increased foot traffic and sales. These small businesses gain long-term customers who return for tune-ups and upgrades, not just one-time buyers.

About a quarter of the rebates went to income-qualified customers, making clean transportation accessible to people who need affordable options most. With gas prices high, charging an e-bike with cheap electricity beats paying for expensive fuel.

Ava's next E-bike Test & Ride event happens June 27th at Coliseum BART Station. The first event drew over 300 people who tested different models, met local shops, and learned about available rebates. It's a chance to try before you buy and see if an e-bike fits your life.

The company powers these rides with clean energy too. Customers can choose between Ava's Bright Choice plan, which draws primarily from renewable and hydroelectric sources, or Renewable 100, which is entirely renewable.

Fifteen thousand rebates means fifteen thousand chances to cut emissions, save money, and rediscover what it feels like to get around under your own power, with just a little electric boost.
