Bayern's Kompany Recovering After Meningeal Irritation
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from the hospital five days after collapsing at training, with doctors diagnosing meningeal irritation caused by a viral infection. The 38-year-old manager admitted he pushed through illness instead of resting, but is now recovering at home.
Vincent Kompany is heading home to recover after a frightening collapse at Bayern Munich's training ground last Friday showed him the hard way that even elite coaches need to listen to their bodies.
The 38-year-old manager was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, five days after he collapsed while watching the second team train. He'd been battling a viral infection the week before but kept working through it, a decision that ultimately caught up with him.
Doctors diagnosed the former Belgian defender with meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It's different from full meningitis but serious enough to have caused his collapse.
"To be honest, he's doing well, considering the circumstances," Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl told reporters before Wednesday's cup match. "He was discharged from the hospital today. That's the biggest and best news for all of us."
Kompany himself acknowledged his mistake after Bayern's Champions League match with Arsenal last week. "As a coach, you always want to do everything and accomplish what you can," he told reporters. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body, so at some point it just said, 'Stop now!'"

The coach had also been dealing with a hip injury that had already limited his movement during recent matches. Sharp-eyed fans noticed him spending more time in the dugout rather than pacing the technical area during games against RB Leipzig and Arsenal.
The Bright Side
Kompany's openness about pushing himself too hard sends an important message in a profession known for its relentless pace. By sharing his experience, he's giving others permission to prioritize health over the pressure to power through illness.
His assistant coaches Aaron Danks and Rene Maric are leading the team in his absence, starting with a cup match against second-tier Magdeburg. Bayern then faces a crucial Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, with both teams tied at the top with 17 points.
Eberl expressed confidence that Kompany will return at full strength once he completes his home rehabilitation. No timeline has been set for his return, allowing the manager to focus on a full recovery without the pressure of rushing back.
Sometimes the best leadership means knowing when to step back and take care of yourself first.
