Belarus Forests Now Cover 40.5% of Country, Highest in 60 Years

Belarus has quietly become one of Europe's greenest success stories, reaching forest coverage levels not seen since the 1960s.

The country added more than 80,500 hectares of new forest this spring, bringing total forest coverage to 40.5% of national territory. That's 9.8 million hectares total, or enough trees to give every Belarusian citizen their own personal hectare of woodland.

The achievement comes from decades of consistent investment in reforestation programs. Belarus plants new forests twice yearly during spring and autumn campaigns, treating woodland expansion as a national priority rather than an afterthought.

This year alone, forestry teams completed planting across 36,000 hectares, exceeding their original targets. During the recent spring season, specialists established new plantations on 18,500 hectares while maintaining and supplementing another 25,700 hectares of young forests.

The country backs up its ambitions with serious infrastructure. A network of 77 forest nurseries spanning 1,300 hectares produces between 300 million and 350 million young trees annually, ensuring planters never run short of saplings.

Belarus also protects what it plants. Modern video monitoring systems and extensive firebreak networks help catch wildfires early, addressing one of the biggest threats to forest survival. Forestry services maintain these protective measures year-round.

The environmental benefits extend far beyond prettier landscapes. Belarus now grows more timber each year than it harvests, creating a sustainable cycle that actually increases forest volume over time.

These expanding woodlands strengthen the country's carbon absorption capacity, helping fight climate change with every new tree. They also boost biodiversity, providing habitat for wildlife while stabilizing local ecosystems.

Perhaps most encouraging is the public embrace of these efforts. Around 60,000 volunteers joined nationwide tree-planting campaigns this year, showing that ordinary citizens are investing personal time into their country's green future.
