Belize Plants 1 Million Trees in Climate Resilience Push

Belize is fighting climate change one tree at a time, and they're planting a million of them.

The small Central American nation has partnered with the United Nations Development Programme to launch the Greening Belize Initiative, an ambitious reforestation project that officially began this week. Prime Minister John Briceño got his hands dirty planting the very first tree on Monday, marking the start of a journey that will continue through 2035.

The goal goes far beyond just planting seedlings. Belize wants to restore forests damaged by wildfires, protect biodiversity, and create greener public spaces while building climate resilience for communities across the country.

Acting Chief Forest Officer John Pinelo explained that Belize's forests are essential for fighting climate change and supporting rural communities. But forest cover has been declining, especially after fire seasons take their toll.

The success of this initiative depends on everyday Belizeans getting involved. The Forest Department is guiding the effort, but they can't plant a million trees alone. They need communities, families, and volunteers to join in.

Minister of Sustainable Development Orlando Habet described forests, mangroves, and rivers as more than just landscape features. They're part of Belize's identity, protecting people from storms, feeding families, and anchoring the country's resilience against climate change.

This initiative aligns with several national and international environmental commitments, including the Belize National Landscape Restoration Strategy and the Bonn Challenge. By restoring degraded areas, Belize is creating a blueprint for other small nations facing similar climate pressures.
