Indian entrepreneur Santosh Mahalingam helping connect small-town workers with quality job opportunities

Bengaluru Startup Creates 1,000 Jobs in Small-Town India

🦸 Hero Alert

After leaving his Kerala hometown for work 30 years ago, banker Santosh Mahalingam quit his career to help thousands find quality jobs without moving to big cities. His startup Mikro Grafeio now connects companies with talent in 21 smaller Indian cities.

Santosh Mahalingam spent three decades dreaming of returning to Kozhikode, the Kerala town he left behind to find work as a young MBA graduate.

Now the 50-year-old is making sure others don't have to make that same choice. His Bengaluru-based startup Mikro Grafeio has created over 1,000 jobs in smaller Indian cities, helping people earn good salaries without leaving their families and communities.

The company works both sides of the equation. Mikro Grafeio convinces corporations to move operations to Tier II and III cities, then helps them set up offices and recruit local talent. For companies, it means lower costs and easier hiring. For workers, it means staying home.

"COVID broke the myth that we all need to be together in a single city for work," Santosh tells The Better India. Half of metro workers' time goes to commuting, he notes, while small-town employees can live near friends and family at a fraction of the cost.

The concept isn't obvious to everyone. Companies worry about finding skilled workers and infrastructure outside major metros. But Santosh and his four co-founders tackle those concerns head-on, providing everything needed to make the transition smooth.

They've now worked with over 50 clients operating from 21 cities including Trichy, Coimbatore, Kochi, Bhopal, and Lucknow. In Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, they helped global IT companies hire fresh graduates locally. The jobs are so appealing that many workers accept pay cuts to move back home.

Revathi Ndurai is one success story. After taking a five-year career break when she moved to Tirunelveli following marriage, she found no relevant jobs in her new hometown. Last year, Mikro Grafeio helped place her with software company 3i Infotech right in Tirunelveli. She gets the same quality projects she would in Mumbai.

The Ripple Effect

The startup's impact extends beyond individual workers. When young professionals stay in smaller cities, they strengthen local economies by spending and investing there. Their presence attracts more businesses, creating a positive cycle of growth.

India sees 51 million people migrate internally for work each year. Santosh believes the country can't thrive with just a handful of booming metros while other cities stagnate. Many towns already have suitable infrastructure and potential.

"The next growth of India is in rural areas and Tier II and III cities," he says. "That is the social revolution we want to bring into the lives of people."

Santosh himself plans to return to Kozhikode next year. After cycling past the Standard Chartered bank branch as a college student, dreaming of working there someday, he eventually did join the bank but had to leave town for the opportunity. Now he's creating the future he wished existed back then.

The name Mikro Grafeio means "a small office" in Greek, perfectly capturing the vision of quality work happening anywhere, not just in gleaming metro towers.
