Benue Frees 14 Inmates, Honors Heroes at 50th Birthday

Fourteen people serving prison sentences in Benue State, Nigeria, got a second chance this week when Governor Hyacinth Alia granted them clemency as part of the state's 50th anniversary celebration.

During a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, the governor announced the pardons alongside plans to honor historical figures who shaped Benue's legacy. One beneficiary, Terhumba Aondona, saw his 10-year sentence reduced to four years, while 13 others serving various terms received full pardons.

The clemency grants included people like Akaajime Imoter, Kongusu Terzugwe, and Terngu Orshi, among others. Each will now have the opportunity to rebuild their lives and reconnect with their communities.

But the anniversary celebrations extended beyond mercy to remembrance. Governor Alia announced that the state would immortalize General Murtala Muhammed, the former military Head of State who created Benue on February 3, 1976.

"There is every need to immortalize past heroes and those who contributed to building legacies for generations to inherit," Alia explained. His administration believes honoring those who shaped Benue's foundation will inspire future generations.

The state also renamed its Printing and Publishing Corporation after late veteran journalist Chief Dan Agbese. Several other prominent Benue citizens, including the late Wanteregh Unongo, Elder Isaac Shaahu, Senator Suemo Chia, General Atom Kpera, and the late Tashaku Oradi, will have public institutions and projects named in their honor.
