Benue Plans College Upgrade, Cement Factory Revival

Governor Hyacinth Alia just gave thousands of young Nigerians something to look forward to: better schools and real job opportunities.

At a recent town hall meeting in Oju, the Benue State governor announced plans to upgrade the local College of Education into a full tertiary institution. The move aims to expand access to quality higher education for young people across the region.

But education isn't the only area getting attention. Alia revealed that experts have already inspected the long-dormant Igumale Cement Factory in Enone, with plans underway to bring it back to life. The factory's revival could create hundreds of jobs and jumpstart economic activity in an area that desperately needs both.

The governor also promised to complete the ongoing Oju-Awajir Road construction and deliver additional infrastructure projects across the constituency. These aren't empty promises, according to local officials who point to recent completions like the revived Taraku Mills and new Food Basket Brewery as proof of progress.

The Ripple Effect

The real magic happens when these pieces connect. Alia urged local farmers to ramp up food production, explaining that revived industries will create guaranteed markets for their crops. For years, farmers have been forced to sell produce at rock-bottom prices because buyers were scarce.

Now, facilities like the Fruit Juice Company and brewery will need steady supplies of local crops. That means fair prices, predictable income, and an end to devastating post-harvest losses that have plagued the agricultural community.

The economic boost extends beyond farming. A functioning cement factory means construction jobs, supplier contracts, and the kind of industrial base that keeps young people from leaving home to find work elsewhere.

During the visit, traditional rulers honored Alia with the title "Ogakwu of Igede Land," meaning "Strong Man of Igede," recognizing his development efforts. Local officials described the progress made in just three years as unprecedented, particularly in security, healthcare, and infrastructure.

The governor's tour included meetings with religious leaders, political figures, and community stakeholders across multiple constituencies. Deputy Governor Sam Ode highlighted improvements across Benue South, from road rehabilitation to healthcare upgrades.

Young people watching a college transform and a factory reopen are seeing something powerful: proof that their hometowns have a future worth staying for.
