Berryhill Rallies from Behind to Win State Baseball Title

When Berryhill Post 165 trailed 3-2 in the sixth inning of the American Legion Baseball state championship game, their season hung in the balance. But Aryan Punjabi had other plans.

The Berryhill slugger delivered a game-winning two-run single on Tuesday, July 28, lifting his team to a 4-3 victory over Bay City Post 18 and claiming the state title. The win punches their ticket to the Great Lakes Region tournament at the University of Kentucky in early August.

"I knew he was probably going to throw a fastball to try to get back ahead," Punjabi said of the crucial at-bat. "He threw one right where I was looking for it, so I just wanted to hit it as hard as I could."

The championship game marked the third matchup between Berryhill and Bay City in three days. Manager Dan Cronkright called it the most competitive state tournament in recent memory, with three or four teams playing at championship level all week.

Berryhill jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on Owen Dominowski's two-run single. Bay City clawed back to tie the game, then took their first lead with a run in the sixth inning.

That's when centerfielder Dominowski made a game-saving play, gunning down a Bay City runner at home plate to limit the damage. "He stayed behind it and made a run at it, and he had all of his momentum going forward on that throw," Cronkright said.

The defensive gem set up Punjabi's heroics. After walks to Dominowski and Gabe Wegener in the bottom of the sixth, Punjabi drove them both home with his clutch single to right field.

Wegener sealed the victory with 3 1/3 innings of relief pitching, stranding a Bay City runner in the seventh to end it. The championship marks a tremendous achievement for a team that showed resilience and determination throughout the tournament.

Punjabi earned the Kiki Cuyler Award as tournament MVP after leading his team in batting average while also winning a game as a pitcher. His manager praised his summer-long dedication to improving his game, noting how hard work and preparation paid off in the biggest moment.

The 16-year-old called this "some of the most fun baseball I've played" and said the team's electric dugout atmosphere kept everyone fired up. They'll carry that energy to Kentucky, where they'll stay together in a hotel and compete against new teams for the regional crown.

For a group of young athletes who refused to quit when trailing late, the comeback victory proves that believing in each other makes all the difference.
