Best Friends Both Win Grand Champion at Indiana 4-H Fair

😊 Feel Good

Morgan Gill and Ella Scott, best friends for 10 years, each won grand champion titles with their steers at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair before heading to college. The wins cap off a decade of friendship and dedication, and will help fund their education.

After 10 years of friendship and 10 years in 4-H, Morgan Gill and Ella Scott got the perfect sendoff before college: they both won grand champion titles at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair.

"I can't remember a time I didn't know Morgan, to be honest with you," Scott said. The two teens from South Bend, Indiana, have grown up together in the 4-H program, learning responsibility, animal care, and dedication.

This year, both raised steers for competition. Gill's steer, Nos, grew so fast she had to put him on a diet. He went from 600 pounds to 1,500 pounds.

The care these teens put into their animals goes far beyond basic feeding. Some steers even see chiropractors. "He gets better treatment than we do sometimes," Gill joked about Nos.

That dedication paid off when Nos won Grand Champion Dairy Beef Steer. "It was very emotional. It meant everything," Gill said. "That was my goal, to either win showmanship or win champion steer."

Then came Wednesday night, when Scott's steer, Nacho, won Grand Champion Beef Lottery Steer. The best friends had both achieved their biggest 4-H dreams in the same year.

"I think it was the most special way I could've gone out with my best friend," Scott said. "So I'm really excited about it. It was a great experience for the both of us."

Sunny's Take

The celebration comes with a bittersweet goodbye. Both girls auctioned their steers, hoping to raise about $10,000 each to help pay for college. Saying goodbye to animals they spent months caring for isn't easy, but it marks the start of their next chapter.

The bond between these best friends will continue beyond the show ring. Even though they won't compete anymore, both plan to return next year to cheer on the next generation of 4-H competitors stepping into the spotlight.
