Bezos Family Gives $100M for NYC Free Preschool

The timing couldn't be better for New York families. Last month, Mamdani announced that free early care and education for 2-year-olds would become universally accessible year-round across all five boroughs.

The partnership raises eyebrows given Mamdani's outspoken stance against billionaire wealth. The mayor has publicly stated he doesn't believe billionaires should exist and recently proposed a luxury second-home tax while standing in front of billionaire Ken Griffin's $238 million penthouse.

But when it comes to helping families, pragmatism wins. Jenna Lyle, a city hall spokesperson, told Fortune that delivering universal childcare requires everyone pulling together: government, providers, working families, and yes, even philanthropy.

The Ripple Effect

This donation does more than fund classrooms. Robin Hood CEO Richard Buery Jr. explained that while public funding drives the expansion, philanthropic support helps deploy those resources more effectively across the city's diverse neighborhoods.

The organization already funds over 300 nonprofits across New York's five boroughs and helped move more than 32,000 residents into housing. During the pandemic, it raised over $115 million for city residents when they needed it most.

The donation arrives as New York wrestles with a $12 billion budget shortfall. Despite this challenge, the mayor's new budget proposal includes $59.6 million for childcare and education without slashing services or raising property taxes on working families.

Jackie Bezos, Jeff Bezos' mother and former Robin Hood board member, chose to focus her family's philanthropy on early childhood development, a decision that will touch thousands of young lives. For parents juggling work and childcare costs that often exceed rent, universal 2-K programming represents real financial relief and peace of mind.

Mamdani partnered with Robin Hood earlier this year on a citywide parent survey to understand childcare needs better. That collaboration shows how shared goals can bridge ideological divides when children's futures are at stake.
