Big Sister Jaleesa Wins $25K Award for Mentoring Jaime
A mentor match that started in mutual grief became a lifelong bond. Now Jaleesa and Jaime are being honored as one of Big Brothers Big Sisters' 2026 Bigs & Littles of the Year.
When Jaleesa and Jaime were matched through Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2019, they were both drowning in grief. Jaime had just lost her dad, and Jaleesa had lost her grandfather, the only father figure she'd ever known.
What started as a mentorship became something deeper. A mutual lifeline that would carry both of them through the pandemic and beyond.
Jaleesa signed up to be a Big Sister because she remembered how isolating it felt growing up. She wanted to be the safe adult for a child who needed one. But she didn't expect what happened next.
"Being a Big broke me open emotionally in ways that I didn't think were possible," Jaleesa says. "The love that I have for Jaime makes me want to be more present, more attuned, more of whatever she needs to get her through that moment."
The relationship transformed both their lives. They talk openly about anxiety, trauma, grief, and the reality of being Black women in America. Jaime often calls Jaleesa before her own mother when she needs advice.

Jaime's mother Latona sees the difference. "Their bond has provided Jaime with guidance, encouragement, and stability that has helped her grow in confidence and independence," she says.
The Ripple Effect
The impact of their relationship extends far beyond their weekly hangouts. Jaleesa has been there for every college application, every moment of self-doubt, every emotional hurdle. So far, Jaime has been accepted to Ball State, Butler, University of Alabama, and College of Charleston, with multiple scholarships.
She plans to double-major in Accounting and Astronomy/Astrophysics while double minoring in Japanese and Aerospace Engineering. Those aren't dreams Jaime is chasing alone.
"Jaime possesses so much passion, creativity, and intellect," Jaleesa explains. "She didn't need anyone to ignite her potential. She needed someone to protect it."
Their bond caught the attention of Big Brothers Big Sisters nationwide. Out of thousands of mentoring matches across the country, Jaleesa and Jaime were chosen as 2026 Bigs & Littles of the Year. The honor includes a $25,000 scholarship over four years.
At the BBBS Gala, Jaime made her feelings clear. "You show up for me more than most of my blood relatives, and that means more than I can ever explain," she told Jaleesa. "You've taught me to be kinder to myself, to celebrate my progress, and to keep going even when things feel heavy."
As Jaime prepares to head off to college, Jaleesa promises she isn't going anywhere. "Should she ever need a reminder, I'll be there. Always."
