Bihar Dad Funds PhD Over Dowry, Daughter Reaches IIT

While most fathers in her Bihar town saved for dowries, Prachi Thakur's dad had a different plan. He invested every rupee into her education, even as relatives told him he was wasting money on a daughter.

Prachi grew up in a makeshift house where her father repaired gas stoves to make ends meet. Around her, girls her age were being married off right after Class 10, following custom and expectation.

Her father shielded her from the pressure. When relatives urged him to teach her cooking instead of chemistry, he refused. When they suggested marriage over college, he held firm.

As a child, Prachi didn't always appreciate his choices. She felt embarrassed that her father ran a betel leaf stall while other kids' parents worked in offices with ironed shirts. She wished he could be like them.

"Money isn't everything in life," he would tell her. Back then, she didn't understand.

Today, she does. While classmates learned to lower their voices, her father taught her confidence on stage. While others prepared for dowry negotiations, she prepared for entrance exams.

The investment paid off beyond anyone's imagination. Prachi earned her PhD from IIT Roorkee, one of India's most prestigious institutions. She now works as a diversity strategist at World Women Tourism and shares her story as a TEDx speaker.

Why This Inspires

Prachi's story shows how one person's courage can break generations of harmful tradition. Her father didn't just save money differently. He saved his daughter's dreams from a system designed to limit them.

His choice created ripples beyond his family. Every time Prachi speaks, she proves to other fathers and daughters what becomes possible when education replaces dowry.

She describes her father as someone who "made the best lemon tea with all the lemons that life dealt us." From a gas stove repair shop to the halls of IIT, that's exactly what he did.

"It takes a strong family," Prachi says, saluting fathers who protect their daughters from customs that would burn their dreams to the ground.
