Bishop's Women's Golf Team Wins First RSEQ Title

A university golf program that spent years rebuilding just achieved something it had never done before.

The Bishop's Gaiters women's golf team won their first RSEQ conference championship in program history at Club de Golf Les Boisés de Joly. The victory completed a perfect season after the team won both regular season tournaments earlier in the fall.

Gabrielle Santerre made the weekend even more memorable by capturing Bishop's first individual women's golf championship. She finished with rounds of 89, 75, and 75 to take the title home to Lennoxville, Quebec.

Head coach Ryan Smith called the achievement "a long time coming" after years of steady progress. The team had shown flashes of success in previous seasons but lost key players to graduation each year.

The championship came down to the final round. Bishop's held just a two-shot lead over the University of Montreal heading into day three of the tournament.

Smith brought in three new athletes with strong competitive backgrounds to join experienced players like Santerre and Meaghan Patterson. The blend of newcomers and veterans proved to be the winning formula, as Bishop's held on to win the championship by two shots.

The Ripple Effect

The championship victory earned Bishop's a spot at the national championship in June 2027. They'll be one of only two RSEQ women's teams competing at the event.

Smith explained that any player who competed during the fall season remains eligible for nationals, even those graduating before the June tournament. That rule means the championship team can stay together for one more shot at a title.

The Gaiters women showed that patient rebuilding and steady progress can lead to breakthrough moments. For a program that spent years developing talent and watching graduates leave, this season proved the investment was worth it.

Now they have a trophy, an undefeated season, and a chance to compete for a national championship next summer.
