Blackpool Lifeboat Crew Saves Two Boys From Drowning

A mother watched her son's head disappear underwater, clinging to a pier as waves crashed over him, before lifeboat volunteers arrived just in time to pull him to safety.

Zully, a mother of four from Leeds, was celebrating Eid in Blackpool with 16 family members on May 28 when her 10-year-old son Subby and 12-year-old nephew Kizza wandered too far from shore. The rapidly rising tide cut them off from the beach, leaving them desperately holding onto the South Pier's metal supports.

"It didn't feel real, it was like I was in some kind of helpless dream," Zully recalled. She tried to wade out to reach them but was knocked back by powerful waves.

For 40 agonizing minutes, the boys hung on as water rose higher and higher. Zully watched Subby's head go under the waves, gasping for air each time he surfaced. Her 21-year-old nephew Ted also tried reaching the boys but couldn't make it through the current.

"I prayed: 'Lord, give me a miracle,'" Zully said. "I was shouting at the top of my voice 'We need the orange boat.'"

The Blackpool RNLI lifeboat crew arrived within four minutes of the emergency call. The volunteers maneuvered their boat alongside the pier and pulled both boys from the water. Video footage captured the dramatic moment they grabbed the exhausted children.

"If we had let go of them they would have been sucked under by the water," said volunteer Nathan Lee.

Why This Inspires

Zully had never heard of the RNLI charity before that terrifying day. Now she calls the volunteers her family's miracle workers.

"I can't comprehend the fact they are just normal people with jobs and their own family, but they'd risk that to save my family," she said. The crew members are volunteers who juggle regular careers while remaining ready to launch into action at a moment's notice.

The family traveled back to Blackpool to personally thank their rescuers. After hugging the crew, young Subby said: "Everyone who helped me was a blessing in my eyes."

These everyday heroes remind us that ordinary people choose to do extraordinary things.
